According to reports, Dishana Singh occupied the house with her three children aged six, 10 and 12. When this publication visited the scene, the fire had already been extinguished.
The occupants of the house were being consoled by neighbours and friends.
Singh told Guyana Times International that she secured her home and left with her three children to make a purchase from a nearby shop.
It was while at the shop that someone told her that her house was on fire, so she hurried home. As she got closer to her house, she saw smoke billowing from the building and persons were busy trying to put out the blaze.
The teary-eyed woman said she immediately became dazed, so she could not recall what transpired thereafter. According to the unemployed Singh, she has been occupying the rented house, which was fully furnished with the exception of a refrigerator, for the past five years.
When asked what might have caused the blaze, the woman, who was fighting to hold back tears, said for the past three months, the main electrical switch has been sparking continuously, but she never reported the fault to workers of the power company whenever they were in the neighbourhood.
A woman who was on the scene but requested anonymity said it was a next-door neighbour who saw “smoke coming from Singh’s house” and informed other neighbours, who formed a bucket brigade. She added that the fire service was also summoned, but the fire tender upon its arrival had no water.
The Guyana Fire Service is yet to comment on the unfortunate incident; but according to a fireman on the scene, an investigation has been launched.
